Q: Is air-brush tanning safe?
A: YES. DHA, the tanning ingredient in sunless tanners, has been approved for cosmetic use by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Canadian Health Ministry and most of the EU member nations for many years (in the US since the 1960’s). It is considered non-toxic and non-carcinogenic. DHA based sunless tanners have been recommended by the Skin Cancer Organization, American Academy of Dermatology, Canadian Dermatology Association, The American Cancer Society and the American Medical Association. return to top
Q: How long will my Suvara tan last?
A: You can expect your Suvara tan to fade naturally and evenly after 5-10 days. The longevity of your tan is affected by a number of factors, all related to how quickly your skin naturally exfoliates. The most effective way to prolong the life of your tan is to moisturize, slowing your natural exfoliation process. Activities such as prolonged very hot showers, hot tubs, saunas and swimming will tend to dry your skin and shorten how long your sunless tan will last.
When leaving your Suvara appointment our specialist will provide you with our Post-Session Recommendations (also available online) and can answer any questions you might have…just ask, they’ve been extensively trained and certified. Lastly, moisturize, moisturize, moisturize – it’s great for your skin and is the best way to prolong your Suvara tan. return to top
Q: Does a Suvara tan protect me from getting sunburned?
A: NO. The tan achieved from an air-brush session provides no UV protection and we recommend that you always protect yourself from the damaging rays of the sun by wearing a good quality sunscreen. return to top
Q: I love my tan! How frequently do I need to come to maintain a healthy glow?
A: At Suvara we believe everyone not only looks good with a tan…they feel good! Our recommendation for maintenance is every 7-10 days with a week or two break every 3-5 weeks to prevent build-up. return to top
Q: Why should I go to Suvara versus do it myself?
A: The biggest challenge to doing it yourself is how even and completely you can apply the tanning solution. Spots such as your back are just hard to get to and others such as the back of your legs or the tops of your arms your never really sure if reached everywhere the evenly.
Our Suvara specialists go through a rigorous training process and use state-of-the-art technology, Also, they have comprehensive understanding of all Suvara products to provide you with the perfect match to your skin color and tanning desires. They’ll provide you with a flawless tan every time. return to top
Q: Why did my tan wash off in the shower?
A: Don’t worry; your tan didn’t wash off. What washed off was just cosmetic bronzer. The bronzer is included in the tanning solution to provide you with immediate color following your appointment. The real, lasting color develops below the bronzer as the DHA reacts with the amino acids in your skin. return to top
Q: How does air-brush tanning work?
A: The Suvara Solution tans the top two layers of your skin, the epidermis, through a natural process called a malliard reaction. Dihydroxyacetone (DHA), the active ingredient, is a simple carbohydrate derived from vegetable sugars. It is the same active ingredient as all self tanners and has been approved by the FDA since the 1960’s. The process is similar to the way an apple turns brown when left in the air.
The malliard reaction or “development” of the DHA takes approximately 8-12 hours, which is why we recommend you wait at least eight hours before showering. When you leave our studio after your appointment you will have a beautiful, natural looking golden bronze color. The ‘instant gratification’ you see is a result of cosmetic bronzers which will wash off in your first shower. Don’t panic, once the bronzer washes off you will see your flawless Suvara tan underneath. return to top
Q: How do I prepare for my air-brush tanning session?
A: The key to the optimum Suvara tan is to achieve maximum even absorption of the tanning solution. To achieve this it’s best if your skin is free of all moisturizers, creams, lotions, oils, and deodorants at the time of your session. The issue is that products such as these can block the pores of the skin, acting as a barrier on the surface, prohibiting the effective, even absorption of the solution.
We also recommend, if possible, that you pamper yourself one to two days before your Suvara session. Get your manicure and pedicure one of two days days in advance, exfoliate, shave and/or waxing 12-24 hours in advance, and moisturize 2 or so hours in advance of your appointment.
If it’s not possible (or just not convenient) to do these things prior to your appointment – don’t sweat it! Our Suvara specialist have tricks up their sleeves to deal with it and our partner Salons/Spas bring a broad plate of services to pamper you in any way you’d like. Relax and enjoy! return to top
Q: How long will my Suvara appointment take?
A: Our Suvara Specialists go to great lengths to ensure that you have a flawless tan. We make sure that every aspect of your Suvara experience is perfect by paying very close attention to all the details involved in the process and your experience. You can expect to be with us from 30-45 minutes for a full body tan; a few minutes longer if you add our special exfoliative spray and/or deep hydrating treatment. return to top
Q: What should I wear to my Suvara appointment?
A: We recommend that you wear loose fitting, darker clothing, as it’s possible that some of the cosmetic bronzer may rub off onto your clothing. But don’t worry if it does, all of our formulas are water-based and therefore will not stain most fabrics. We do recommend special care for finer fabrics like silk. Also, if possible try to avoid wearing tighter fitting clothing as it can cause “creases” in the tan or uneven patches due to rubbing with the skin. return to top
Q: Is the process messy?
A: No, Suvara uses state-of-the-art equipment. Our sprayers produce very little overspray and our extraction system catches what little overspray there may be. return to top
Q: What equipment is used?
A: Suvara uses only the highest quality state-of-the-art HVLP (high volume-low pressure) technology to ensure that your air-brush tan is flawless every time. return to top

A: Suvara’s highly trained specialists are perfectionists with the sole objective to give you a perfectly natural looking tan – we don’t want anyone to know it’s not from the sun. One of the key things that sets us apart from other air-brush tans is our detailing process which will ensure your hands and feet, including your manicure/pedicure, look their best and completely natural. Also, our solution will not affect your hair color, but we do provide a hair net to ensure that fact. return to top
Q: Can I get an air-brush tan while I am pregnant?
A: While there is no evidence air-brush tanning has any harmful effects during pregnancy, it is Suvara’s policy not to treat pregnant woman. Besides, you already have a healthy glow! You can return just as soon as you stop breast feeding. return to top
Q: Can I have a reaction to your formula?
A: Although unlikely, those with highly sensitive skin types can have a reaction to almost anything. If this is a concern, please let our specialists know and we are happy to spray a “test patch” for you to monitor for a few days and then return for a full session. return to top
Q: I am a diabetic, is spray tanning OK for me?
A: Yes – Suvara is for you too. DHA is a simple carbohydrate derived from glycerine and was first used in the treatment of diabetes as some diabetics couldn’t tolerate the early synthetic insulins. return to top
Q: How old to I have to be to get a Suvara tan?
A: We require a signed consent for any client under the age of 18 and that a parent be present during the session for any client under the age of 16. return to top
Q: Are there products I might use that can affect the longevity or evenness of my tan?
A: Anything that accelerates exfoliation of your skin will shorten the longevity of your air-brush tan. Also be aware that some products that are applied very locally may have a similar effect, but only in the area where applied. And remember, regularly moisturizing is the best way to prolong your tan.
Activities that will likely shorten your tan:
- Active exfoliation with a loofa, scrub mitt or other exfoliating abrasive
- Wax hair removal
- Shaving with a dull blade tends to scrape the skin, use a new and clean razor with a lubricating product (e.g. hair conditioner)
- Long periods in a hot tub, swimming pool, or a long hot bath
Products that may affect your tan:
- Anti-aging products that “renew,” “refresh” or exfoliate skin
- Toners containing Witch Hazel or Alcohol
- Anti-acne products that exfoliate the skin
- Makeup remover, cleaning products or oils used to clean away eye makeup
- Facial masks or exfoliating scrubs
- Adhesive facial strips
- Hair removal products such as Nair, Veet, Neet etc.
- Hair inhibiting lotions such as Jergens
- Body hair bleach products
- Retin-A type products (Retin-A, Renovate, Tazorac, and Trefinoin)
- Bug spray, when sprayed directly onto the skin can remove or fade the tan – it’s best to spray clothing or walk through a ‘cloud’ instead of applying directly to the skin
